The Free State Sandvield Shooting Range has been developed as the National Shooting Range of SA Hunters since 2019. The one outstanding item is the finishing of the firing points and it was decided on concrete block paving at a slight slope of the 100, 200 and 300m firing points and on the 100m firing point at the shooting range. The funds to do this work were recently approved by the SA Hunters Council. It was decided not to do the job now, but after the Presidential Shooting Competition was also completed on September 14, 2019. It is very dry and any construction work now on the shooting points accompanied by heavy trucks and other tools, potentially very dusty conditions during the competition, therefore the decision to do so later.

Kind regards, André van der Merwe, SA Hunters Manager: Branch and Shooting Activities

Wattlespring Gun Club: Potensiele Ontwikkeling van Skietbaan / Potential development of Shooting Range:

Die moontlike ontwikkeling van 'n skietbaan deur SA Jagters in samewerking met die Wattlespring Gun Club verwys: / The potential development of a shooting range by SA Hunters in co-operation with the Wattlespring Gun Club refers:

 As previously shared with you via e-mail and at a meeting on July 5, 2018 at Inyathipark, SA Hunters were very optimistic about the development of a shooting range that could offer a working solution wo a lot of SA Hunters Branches in Gauteng. The development of a new shooting range in Gauteng (high population with very little land suitable for new shooting ranges) is a long and complicated process. With the final approval of the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), certain restrictions were placed on the development and this caused SA Hunters to withdraw.

In short, the NRCS Limitations come down to the following: About 150m behind the planned shooting slope, there is an Ekskom High Voltage line that needs protection and no bullets are allowed to hit it. The NRCS is only prepared to approve a single shooting range with different levels for different shooting positions as outlined below and the targets then stand at different distances of about 25 to 300m depending on the specific requirements of the shooting exercise. The solution is supposed to ensure that each bullet is shot 300m further into the shooting bay, regardless of the shooting position used - the baffles are supposed to control bullet deviations.

SA Hunters could probably live with a single shooting range, but in our opinion, the specific layout of this proposal creates risks for the shooters iin terms of shots that can hit parts of the shed's steel structure (eg. steel columns) and the baffle structure, resulting in scrapnel that can fly back to the shooter. At this stage, we cannot provide and acceptable and safe way that not only reduces the risk but also removes it altogether. Therefore, the Council of SA Hunters decided to withdraw from the development and informed the Wattlesrpings management accordingly in writing.
